Title: 34980A Calibration
Post by: USMCPMEL on 11-15-2009 -- 14:32:18
Just got 2 of these beasts in. Has anyone calibrated these before? Does it meet 4 to 1 with the 5520A?

We use a 5720A.I don't think the 5520 will suffice.

That sounds right.  We had some of them at my previous employer.  They are pretty accurate.  We had piles of 34970A's and they were in process of replacing them with 34980A's.

a 5720 will be sufficient for the DC volts, current and ohms, but you'll need a 5790A to do the AC volt ranges along with a shunt set to do the AC current ranges. That is if you want to maintain a 4:1.

Dang I was hoping that was not the case. They looked kind of el cheapo I thought maybe they were not that accurate.

You may be able to do it with a 5520 and a 3458A.  You will have to measure the output of the 5520 with the 3458A then compair those measurements with the 34980A.  It will be labor intensive, but it may be accurate enough to test the units with the standards you have.
