Title: Electric Vehicle Charge Station
Post by: calVOID on 06-02-2016 -- 09:20:22
First time poster here.  I was wondering if any of you know anything about Electric Vehicle Charge Stations (for Tesla and the like).  I'm trying to put together some research for my lab to see if it's worth it/there's even a need to calibrate these things. I've found some very limited information on them and am waiting for a response from manufacturers, but figured I would try here.  Thanks in advance.

PS.  I wasn't sure where to post this so I'm sorry if this isn't the right board, but the stations just put out KW so I figured I'd try here.

If they charge people to use them (no pun intended), then there has to be a watt-hour meter in the line somewhere; and any time a monetary exchange is based on a measurement, it falls under the realm of legal metrology and is probably regulated by the local department of weights and measures (like those that make sure gas stations don't cheat by selling "short" gallons).

Ok so what you're saying is that they're most likely handled or will be handled by a government agency rather than a private lab?  From the bit of research I've done it seems like deregulation is the trend that's being pushed in California, Oregon, Washington.  What you're saying definitely makes sense though.  Thanks for the response.

If not a government agency, maybe an electric utility (after all, someone has to calibrate the watt-hour meters connected to homes and businesses). I'm not saying that a private lab couldn't be involved in some fashion; often times those calibrations are sub-contracted to private firms which have obtained licenses from the state board of weights and measures.

Ok great.  You've just steered me in the next direction I need to go with this.  I really appreciate it.
