Does anyone know if TMDE has to be calibrated before it goes into spare tools? 00-20-14 states if it is calbrated and not used it can be CBU.  I'm trying to find out if their is a requirement for all TMDE to be iniitially calibrated.

3.2.2
"CBU items shall be
calibrated at least once before being designated as CBU.New TMDE shall require an initial calibration to
ensure it meets requirements before being designated CBU."

And in doing so if you choose to limit something be sure it is also on the sticker. And if you are not with the lab send it in with a 350 tag explaining you want initial calibration and cbu status and what parameters you require if you know them.

00-20-14 is a public document and you can freely grab the file here

It's been a long time since I was in the AF; however, the Spares program at the Space Center is very similar to what it was in the AF.  Generally speaking all spares are calibrated then assigned a maximum interval of 18-24 months.  If the item is taken out of the spares storage area to be put into service the K-100 assigned cal interval would be invoked.  The item would be due for calibration based on that interval as long as the new due date does not exceed the previously assigned maximum of 18-24 months.  Additionally, most quality systems frown on intermingling calibrated tools with non-calibrated (CBU) items.

Thanks, do you know of a reference for this?

There is a system called SPRAMS but that is F15 related. He might be thinking about WRM. See 00-20-14 for info. However if this is a government owned piece of property (Air Force) it must be calibrated once as dictated in 00-20-14. Manufacturer's calibration can be accepted if certain criteria are met but I'm not sure if that would apply to an item you desire to make CBU. If you are in the Nellis lab contact your quality manager. If in doubt pick up a copy of the latest AFMETCAL  newsletter and submit a question. If you are not PMEL it is on the AF portal. Search for functional areas and Metrology and Calibration. Any grey areas are to be handled through the required PMEL lab Quality Manual. There may also be command and base level supplements to 00-20-14 however any additional documentation should only clarify or specify addditional things to do. 00-20-14 is a minimum therefore any items will be calibrated. If you want a spare look into XB3 assets in supply and let supply hold them. If its still in supply you won't be using it.
