I have 2 Fluke 79series 3 (new style) that are way out of range on ohms.

One is reading -87k ohm the other is reading 68 k ohms without anything applied and no leads in. The 68 Kohms one will read zero when you shorth the leads the other one will not. Any ideas?

I've seen that happen on a couple we had at our PMEL. We suspected that they had been subjected to some serious kilovolts. They were sent back to Fluke.

I used to work at the Fluke Service Center.  The best way to do this is to go to their web site and create your own RMA.   If you create your own RMA you can follow the progress of the item all the way though the process. If they are not over 10 years old you'll probably be in luck for warranty work unless the meters have been subjected to customer abuse.

I think thats what happened. I was hoping to fix them myself. My friend works at a plant that makes transformers I really doubt if Fluke will repair them under warranty they seem to have got pretty stingy about that lately.

When I used to work at GE Microelectronics Center (semiconductor wafer fab of yesteryear), One of the maintenance technicians brought in his Fluke 77 saying it didn't work.  When he handed it to me, I perceived a smoky smell (hint, hint).  It was pretty well fried, as he had erroneously connected it up to an etcher supply (a 600W RF source at 13.56 MHz).  Duhhh..

I contacted a friend at the Fluke Service Center and if the meters have a S/N of 666XXX or higher there should be no problem getting them repaired in warranty unless there has been customer abuse.
